Since we have been at about 125 “likes” for the last 3 months it seems our initial strategy of simply hoping people will somehow meander onto our page has fallen a little short. So we have decided to try something else…here’s what we’ve come up with.

We are going to award the participating agency with the most popular comment on our Facebook page a $100 gift card.

Here’s how to participate:

First, visit www.facebook.com/911CellPhoneBank and “like” our page.

Then post a comment about your participation in the 911 Cell Phone Bank program and be sure to mention the name of your agency. Something like…“The XYZ Agency has been a participant since 2005 and we love the program because…”.

Next, invite your Facebook friends to “like’ our page, AND “like” or comment on your comment. The Agency with the most combined “likes” and comments will get the $100 Gift Card.

Have questions? Call us for answers at 866-290-7864. As always, thanks for your support!

***UPDATE*** Each Facebook “like” earns us a minute of airtime! [more]

Anson County Sheriff Tommy Allen said, “Sometimes the simplest thing like giving a child a small stuffed animal for them to hold dries up tears and helps them get through some of life’s worst events. We provide and share these with the police departments, domestic violence and the department of social services.” The Sheriff said that his office has given away over one thousand of these stuffed animals to children since this project began over four years ago. “We have Logan and his grandmother to thank for starting this project for us.” The Sheriff said.

Logan told the Sheriff, “I’ve just got one thing to say, everyone should help children by giving toys and stuffed animals to the Sheriff.” Logan is the son of Bruce and Kitt Goodwin of Wadesboro and will be in the third grade this year. Diane said she wanted to especially thank the consignment shop, The Bean Stalk, in Wadesboro for their help in acquiring some of the stuffed animals.

Thank you Sheriff Tommy Allen for sharing this story with us.

The 911 Cell Phone Bank will send the Sheriff’s Office a supply cell phones to keep on hand to give out when needed or requested. The phones will be distributed free through the Sheriff’s Office; as well as the Grace Senior Citizens Center and the local Domestic Violence organization. The phones will only call 911.

“This program will allow individuals who may not have easy access to a cell phone to have one free of charge to use for emergencies. Even those with house phones can carry these phones with them when they are outside or away from their homes.” Sheriff Allen said. “The used phones we collect will be sent to the Cell Phone Bank organization for reconditioning and they will send us back a supply to keep on hand for local distribution.” Allen said.

A box to drop off used cell phones and accessories is located at the Sheriff’s Office in Wadesboro. ALSO, individuals may drop off used cell phones at Town Hall locations in Ansonville, Peachland, Polkton, Lilesville, and Morven and at the General Store and Fast Shop in Burnsville.

Daralene has gotten a lot of support in the Detroit area from wireless retailers, local businesses, their community and the new Sheriff, Benny Napoleon. Sheriff Napoleon is a firm supporter of the 911 Cell Phone Bank. He has gone out of his way to promote this program. He makes sure he incorporates this program in all his community events and is proud to be a partner. We greatly appreciate all that he and his staff has done to help support this program.
The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) had its 5th Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) on Tuesday, June 15, 2010.

This day is held in support of the United Nations International Plan of Action which recognizes the significance of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue. Many organizations ranging from religious groups and government organizations to professionals in the field of aging, interested individuals as well as older persons themselves will promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by organizing activities around the world to raise awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect.

Elder Abuse Awareness Day was celebrated at “The Mall at Prince George’s” in Hyattsville, Maryland and at the “Iverson Mall” in Temple Hills, Maryland. There were numerous information booths manned by the Prince Georges County Office of the Sheriff Triad Officers, Prince George’s County Police Department, State’s Attorney Office, Maryland Crime Victim’s Resource Center, Inc., The Office of 911, Prince George’s County Health Department, Register of Wills, Prince George’s County Fire Department /EMS, and the Department of Social Services etc. They were assisted by their Explorers who ran the “BINGO” games for the participating seniors. Seniors were informed about neglect, Abuse, Financial Crimes, Scams, Identity Theft and what to look for in everyday situations. They were given health screenings, door prizes and some even had their finger prints done at this event.

Everyone had a wonderful time and they are looking forward to another great event next year. A special thanks goes out to Lorna Jones and Cindy Buie-Brown for their hard work and dedication to Prince Georges County TRIAD.

From the desk of Frankie Morris, of the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office:

Last year alone in Louisiana there were 81 fire related fatalities, 49 of those were senior citizens, which means that 40% of those fatalities were senior citizens. It is with great desire that we can decrease that number and possibly eliminate as many fatalities as we can in Caddo Parish.

In recognizing that many senior citizens in our community need support to protect themselves from the dangers of fire, the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office has partnered with the Louisiana State Fire Marshall’s office to present “Operation Golden Shield”. This program will be operated from the Community Programs ‘ Elderly Crime Victims Office. This is a program designed to place 10-year Lithium smoke detectors in any Caddo Parish senior citizen home, especially targeting those residing in rural Caddo Parish. Along with the smoke detectors, Frankie Morris (from the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office, Elderly Crime Victim Advocate) will be offering 911 emergency cell phones to all seniors in need of one. She will be presenting these phones especially to the senior citizens in rural Caddo Parish.

The program consists of a 15 – 20 minute power point presentation on Fire Prevention in the home. After the presentation, Victim Advocate Morris will compile a list of names and addresses of those in need of a smoke detector. Contact is made with the Representative, Rusty Edwards of the Fire Marshall’s Office. He in turn, sends the number of smoke detectors to the Community Programs ECVA.

It is a known fact that when given smoke detectors, if seniors have no way of installing them, they usually lay around the house collecting dust and are never get installed. Working with our Auxiliary Deputies we will make contact with the senior to insure the installation of the detectors.

The first program is scheduled for July 15th, 2010 @ Christus Schumpert’s Auditorium, 9:00am – 9:30am. Along with Lt. Rusty Edwards, Arson Investigator (LA State Fire Marshall’s Office) his 2nd in Command, Chief Dan Wallace will also be in attendance.

Our next presentation will be set up for Blanchard, then Vivian (rural towns in Caddo Parish). Dates have not been scheduled yet.
