]]> The United Way of Marion County is offering FREE income tax preparation through a variety of VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) locations on Saturday, April 9 and April 16th.  Walk-in appointments on Monday, April 18 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for FREE income tax preparation at the United Way office located at 1401 NE 2nd St, Ocala.  Marion County residents are encouraged to get 100 percent of their return back.  Please call 352-732-9696 to make an appointment.  All volunteers providing tax assistance are trained by the Internal Revenue Service. 

 Residents will need to bring the following information with them:

  • Last year’s Federal Income Tax Return (2009 income tax return)
  • Social Security cards for all taxpayers and dependents
  • Correct birthdates for all names that appear on the return
  • Picture ID including spouse’s, if married and filing joint returns
  • All “Important Tax Documents” (W-2s, 1099s, 1098 for mortgage interest, property taxes)
  • For education credits, bring 1098T and the amount paid for qualified expenses
  • Student Loans Interest:  F1098E
  • For dependent care credit, Child care provider’s name, address, SSN/EIN and amount you paid
  • Cancellation of Debt: F1099C
  • Sch CEZ/Sch C—Call our office for more details.
  • Voided check and saving account number for direct deposit of your refund (this is optional, but gets your cash to you faster.)

If married and filing a joint return, both spouses must come to the VITA site.  Volunteers will NOT prepare Schedule D (complex), Schedule E, request for Social Security Numbers, Employee Business Expenses, Moving Expenses, Nondeductible IRA, or Minor Investment Income. ]]> The Clark County Triad Coordinator Bill Salyers was gracious enough to share the following with us. This is a great idea to spread abroad, thanks Bill.

“Hot Spot Cards” were developed eight years ago as a way to help Springfield residents report crimes anonymously, and to hold local authorities accountable for their response.

The cards have been so successful, organizers are hoping to soon make them available throughout Clark County. A rally to celebrate their success is scheduled at Covenant Presbyterian Church Tuesday evening.

Bill Salyers, who helped organize the rally, said the cards were first developed by a local organization called Justice Action Mercy in 2003. City residents at the time were looking for a new way to report crimes to local authorities anonymously. “This was a tool that anybody could use to send anonymous reports,” Salyers said.

Residents are able to fill out the cards with the appropriate information, and drop them off in the mail. The cards are delivered to a post office box and passed on to a Hot Spot Committee, which assigns a number to each card. The cards are then passed on to local law enforcement for investigation.

“Stephen Moody, chief of the Springfield Police Division, and Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly have both been supportive of the program,” Salyers said. Both meet regularly with the Hot Spot committee to review action taken on each card.

Salyers said since the program began, more than 50 percent of the tips have led to arrests, and another 20 percent are still being investigated.

The committee is now planning to extend their use.  “We’re trying to make it a tool for the entire county, not just the city,” he said.  Several organizations, including the Clark County Triad SALT Council and the Catholic Social Action Committee, work together to make sure the cards are available.

Salyers said “the cards are available at local law enforcement agencies, United Senior Services, 101 S. Fountain Ave., and will be available at local libraries”.
